How to choose

1. Follow safe-sleep basics first

The AAP recommends placing babies on their backs on a firm, flat surface with no loose blankets, pillows or bumpers. Choose sleep products that fit those rules.

2. Buy for your feeding plan

If you plan to breastfeed or pump, a comfortable pump matters more than a drawer full of bottles. If you’ll use formula, start with a few bottles and add more once you know what your baby takes.

3. Pick fabrics that survive the wash

Everything gets washed constantly. Muslin and cotton get softer with washing, while fussy fabrics don’t last.

4. Start small on sizes

Babies outgrow newborn sizes fast. Buy a few, keep receipts, and add as you learn your baby’s size.

Frequently asked questions

How many swaddle blankets do I need?

Most families do well with three to six, so one can be in the wash while others are in use. Muslin also works as a burp cloth, nursing cover or stroller shade.

When should I stop swaddling?

The AAP advises stopping swaddling once your baby shows signs of trying to roll over, often around two months. Switch to an arms-free sleep sack.

Can I use a muslin blanket in the crib?

Not as a loose blanket. Safe-sleep guidance is to keep loose blankets out of the crib. Use a wearable sleep sack instead.

How many diapers does a newborn use?

Expect roughly 8 to 12 a day in the first weeks. Buy one or two boxes of newborn size and move up as your baby grows.
